Cinnamon is mainly derived from the bark of various trees from the genus Cinnamomum. An evergreen native to China and Vietnam, the cinnamon tree has been cultivated in other regions as well. A characteristic of it being shiny, it has leathery green leaves, oval-shaped purple berries, and also small white flowers. Multiple types of cinnamon are available and they differ in quality.
The cinnamon bark is harvested, cut into pieces, and distilled by cinnamon oil manufacturers. The distilled oil is known as Dalchini oil in common parlance. It is an edible cinnamon oil whose medicinal uses have been recorded by the Chinese as early as 2700 B.C, while also earning a mention in the holy bible indicating its importance.
