Babassu or cusi oil is derived from the kernels of the babassu palm. Babassu grows in the Amazon region of South America. The plant grows at a slower rate with a hard solitary stem of 20-50 cm diameter, with an average height of 20-30 meters. It is topped by a dense crown of 15-20 leaves having an average length of 5-8 meters. It produces a fruit that contains 2 to 6 hard-shelled nuts from which kernels are derived. The primary habitat of this plant is the rainforest, a lowland area with humidity. Well-drained, fertile soil is conducive to its growth.
