This crop can either be harvested young or matured. When it is harvested young, it can be used as a vegetable. It has a light green cover and a white flesh. When it is cultivated matured, it can be used as utensil. Bottle gourd is a vine. It is an annual plant. This plant grows in tropical climate.

They have a variety of shapes like huge and rounded, small and bottle shaped, or slim and serpentine. They can grow over 1m long. The gourd was one of the world's first cultivated plants which were not grown only for cooking or eating purposes, but for storing purposes.
