Eucalyptus oil is often added to scent soaps or perfumes. This oil is mainly used in combination with other ingredients to make a variety of products, such as lotions, creams, tea, tinctures, and lozenges. It is also used to make mouthwash, antiseptics and toothpaste. It is also used in products that are applied to the skin to treat wounds, burns and ulcers. The use of eucalyptus oil or eucalyptol in the management of headache and arthritis requires more scientific research.
Eucalyptus has also been used as an insecticide in many repellent sprays. This oil can be found in many cough and cold products to help with the treatment of stuffy nose and cough. It also has antibacterial property; hence it is added to toothpaste to reduce tooth decay.
The therapeutic properties of eucalyptus oil are anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-rheumatic, anti-neuralgic, antispasmodic, antiseptic, antiviral, balsamic, astringent, decongestant, cicatrisant, depurative, deodorant, expectorant, diuretic, hypoglycaemic, febrifuge, stimulant, rubefacient, vulnerary and vermifuge. Side effects can include burning, irritation and local redness.
Diluted eucalyptus oil is applied directly to the skin for swelling and pain of respiratory tract mucous membranes, genital herpes, joint pain, and nasal stuffiness. Eucalyptus leaf contains chemicals that might help control blood sugar. It also contains chemicals that might have activity against bacteria and fungi. Eucalyptus oil contains chemicals that might help pain and inflammation. It might also block chemicals that cause asthma. In dentistry, eucalyptus oil is included in products used as sealers and solvents for root canal fillings.
It blends particularly well with benzoin, thyme, lavender, lemongrass, lemon and pine.
You can never go wrong with Eucalptus Oil and this particular brand is wonderful. Just a few drops in my bath water and I feel refreshed and relaxed, plus such an enhancement to breathing.
